Grooming is an essential part of keeping your companion bird healthy, comfortable, and safe. In a home environment, parrots don't always wear down their beaks and nails as naturally as they would in the wild. Softer perches, processed food, and limited flying space can all lead to overgrowth. And untrimmed flight feathers can put your bird at risk of injury indoors.

That's why Avian Haven hosts Monthly bird Grooming Days, led by our friend and professional groomer Sandy. With years of hands-on avian experience, Sandy provides expert beak, wing, and nail care for birds of all sizes from tiny budgies to large macaws.

### Our Grooming Services

#### Nail Trims

Long, overgrown nails can cause a range of problems for parrots. They can snag on toys, fabrics, and cage bars, leading to broken or torn nails and they can make perching uncomfortable, affecting your bird's grip and foot health.

Most companion parrots benefit from a nail check every 4–8 weeks, though some may go longer between trims depending on species, diet, and the types of perches available at home. Providing a mix of perch diameters and materials including natural wood, concrete, and grooming perches can help maintain nail length between professional trims.

#### Beak Trims

A parrot's beak is one of its most important tools. It's used for eating, climbing, playing, grooming, and social interaction. When the beak becomes overgrown, misaligned, or damaged, it can interfere with all of these activities.

Beak overgrowth can be caused by a lack of chewing opportunities, a diet low in essential nutrients (particularly vitamin A and calcium), liver disease, scaly face mites, or congenital misalignment. Sometimes it's simply the result of a bird not wearing the beak down as quickly as it grows. Providing a variety of safe chew toys and natural perches can help promote natural beak wear between grooming visits.

#### Wing Trims

Wing trimming requires knowledge of feather structure, blood feather identification, and proper technique. A proper wing trim is not about grounding your bird completely. The goal is to allow a controlled, gentle descent rather than a crash landing.

Flight feathers regrow with each moult, which typically occurs once or twice a year depending on the species. Moult cycles vary, and some birds may lose and regrow feathers unevenly. Most owners have wings checked every few months to see if a trim is needed.

Not sure if a wing trim is right for your bird? Some owners choose to keep their birds fully flighted, particularly if they live in a bird-safe room or have flight-training experience. Flight provides excellent exercise and mental stimulation, but it requires a highly controlled environment and consistent training.
